Letter From Trevor Falwell 1956

807 Maitland Cres.,
Hastings.

26 Nov. 1956.

Dear Mrs. Horne,

I am returning by separate mail the newspapers & other papers you so kindly lent me a year ago – or is it over a year? I finished my thesis only last week which explains the long delay in returning your records – nevertheless, I am very grateful for them & appreciate your help.

I have also enclosed two accounts I wrote of the life of your distinguished grandfather. Unfortunately, neither of these quite fitted in with the general theme of the thesis

& I had to exclude them from the main part of the work – but I did include the chief aspects as an appendix. Moreover, I have included two chapters on the part Nelson Bros. played in the pioneering of the freezing trade in Hawke’s Bay & the development of the frozen meat trade generally – all based on the files of the “Hawke’s Bay Herald.”

I put a great deal of time & thought into these two accounts I am enclosing & I feel it would be a pity to destroy them. The style is florid & smacks of journalese but they contain as much personal information as I could acquire. Perhaps, in places, I

have relied too much on my imagination – I will leave you to judge. However, I still think they are valuable, & rather than discard them, I suggest (a) you might like to keep them, or, (b) they could be sent to the Napier Museum for safe-keeping – though they may be inadequate, I have not come across a written account of your grandfather’s life which contains so much information. Perhaps, you might like to annotate them & then pass them on. However, I leave it to you to decide.

Very many thanks again for your help. Kind regards, Yours sincerely,

Trevor K. Fallwell.

P.S. Mr G. Nelson has not seen these scripts – perhaps, he would like to.
