Letter to the Editor 1994 – Lyndhurst rethink disappointing

Lyndhurst rethink disappointing

Mr Editor. – I have previously had a letter published in your column regarding the use of top horticultural land for housing, and I am now appalled that the matter is to be revisited.

The pressure arising from the Hastings business community is short-sighted.

They say that the drop in spending power caused by the hailstorm is hurting the business sector and that building on the top horticultural land would be a shot in the arm.

They have not thought this through, because as more and more land is gobbled up, where will the spending power come from then?

I am also disappointed that Crs Baker and Donnelly saw fit to vote for the destruction of our heritage. Mr Baker was for many years the field representative of Wattie Canneries, and should know the productive capacity of this land, as should Mr Donnelly, who has an orchard not too far distant from Lyndhurst Rd.

It is a pity that we have not got one Hawke’s Bay local body, so that we could then pull together for the whole of the district’s mutual benefit.
