Magazine Article 1979 – Retemeyer Shield winner

Retemeyer Shield Winner

Val and Bob Smiley are this year’s winners of the Retemeyer Shield for the best and most consistent line of fruit to go through the apple inspection depots in Hastings.

Val and Bob have been involved in fruitgrowing for some years but have only recently commenced operations on their own five hectare orchard in Henderson Road. They pack their own fruit with assistance from two other employees.

In presenting the shield at a recent Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers’ Association meeting, Mr. Keith Spackman, President of the Association, congratulated Val and Bob on their fine achievement and wished them every success in the future.

Second place went to Archie Shaw’s Carrick Orchard and third place to Rob Knottenbelt of Poukawa.
