SEVEN FEDERATION BURSARIES AWARDED
Competition for the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation Bursary, valued at $300, was keen this year with 25 applicants. Because one bursary was not uplifted last year, the Selection Committee was able to make a further bursary available for the 1983 academic year. At a meeting on November 24 the Selection Committee awarded bursaries to the following students:
Grant G. Congdon. 19 years old, Mr Congdon is studying for a B.Hort.Sc. at Massey University. He has a background in orcharding and his long-term ambition is to be an orchardist.
Karen P. Crawley. Miss Crawley is studying for a Diploma in Horticulture (Orchard Management) at Massey University. Nineteen years old, she comes from an orcharding background. With her diploma, she hopes to work for a horticultural company or MAF and be in a position where both her horticultural and Japanese language skills may be beneficial.
Julie C. Cumming. Miss Cumming is in her second year at Massey studying for her B.Hort.Sc, and her ambition is to be an orchardist. Her background is orcharding.
Lance A. Bills. Mr Bills is in his first year studying for a B.Hort.Sc. at Massey University. Nineteen years old, he hails from a market garden/orchard. His intention is to gain a horticultural industry job first with a long-term ambition of becoming an orchardist.
Ian J. McHarg. Having finished his second year at Massey, Mr McHarg is studying for a B.Hort.Sc. He is intending to be a horticultural consultant initially and then an orchardist.
Grant W. McDonald. Mr McDonald, aged 20, has completed his Diploma in Horticulture and next year will be studying for his Dip.Hort. Management at Lincoln College. He wishes to become an orchardist as he sees horticulture not as a career opportunity but as a unique way of life.

The Selection Committee comprises Messrs J. P. Borich, A. G. Malcolm, A. E. Hyde and R. A. Ridding (General Secretary).
