Teacher, Wellington, Sydney, while studying; Director, National Film Unit after London Film School; introduced dramatised documentary format covering range of social issues; involved at same time with Amamus Theatre Group which performed at Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, Festival of Open Theatre, Poland 1975; freelance film, Television, 1976-80, exploring archetypal style of theatre based on work of Polish innovator Jerzy Grotowki; work culminated in presentation of theatrical trilogy, Song of a Kiwi, and feature film Sons for the Return Home; developed more politically motivated theatre, 1981-86, involving biculturalism (Theatre of the Eight Day), working in collaboration with Maori, Polynesians; involved in field of community culture
