Born Auckland 21 February 1945. Married 1983 Marcy Farden.
Educated King’s College, Auckland; Auckland University 1962-67 – LLB 1968; Pennsylvania State University 1987 – EMP 1987.
Formerly barrister and solicitor 1967-74, National Party MP for Birkenhead 1975-87, Attorney General and Minister of Justice 1978-84, deputy Prime Minister 1984, Leader of Opposition 1984-86.
Chairman Omniport Napier Ltd 1988-, deputy chair Trust Bank Auckland Ltd 1988-.
Past member Ministry Working Party to review Accident Compensation Scheme 1991, member 1990 Commission 1987-91, member Finance Committee Auckland Festival 1970-75.
Awarded QSO 1987.
Leisure activities include trout fishing.
