Awarded Rhodes Scholarship 1954.
Formerly junior lecturer in Geology, Victoria University College, Wellington 1953-54; Department of External/Foreign Affairs 1957-78; Secretary of Defence 1979-88; Visiting Fellow, Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, Australian National University 1978-90; Guest Scholar, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Washington, DC 1990; Senior Associate Carnegie Endowment for International Pearce, Washington, DC 1990.
Member of Council, Victoria University of Wellington 1986-89.
Publications include The Long Pathway, Te Araraoa (William Collins, 1986).
Awarded CMG 1989.
Represented Victoria University College Wellington and Oxford University at rugby, Star Boating Club Wellington and University College, Oxford at rowing.
Leisure activities include long distance walking, looking at pictures, reading, writing.
