Minutes 1976-03-09 International Committee

ROTARY CLUB OF HASTINGS

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE COMMITTEE

Minutes of meeting held at the home of Paul von Dadelszen

Tuesday, 9th March 1976

Present:   Peter Young (Chairman), Ron Giorgi, Cliff Cox, Gordon Lee, Dug Huggett, George Pacey, Graeme Clarke, Paul von Dadelszen and, as guest speaker, Liliana Coppetti.

Apologies:   Charlie Trask, Alex Mitchell

Minutes:   No formal minutes of the last meeting at Peter Young’s home had been kept. This was in the nature of a social gathering attended by Exchange students from Napier and Hastings and guests from the Ahuriri Club. It had taken the form of an Umakai or Hangi.   The meeting expressed its thanks to Peter Young for this highly successful evening.

Projects:   (1)   The Chairman outlined the intention of the Committee to send at least $500 to the Rotary Club of Nepal to assist with the instillation of water bores for villages there.

(2)   He also made mention of help to be given to a hospital in Karachi, India, to provide such specific items as immunisation guns and doses.

Peter Young reported that the Directors had approved the construction and sale of a home at Flaxmere, the profit from this to go to these two projects. A section had been purchased and the deposit paid. It was anticipated that the profit to the Committee would be between $1000 and $1400.

General Business: Clif [Cliff] Cox talked to the meeting on the subject of the Rotary Foundation and awards for Technical Training and Teachers of the Handicapped. Two applicants have been interviewed by him for the former and five for the latter. It would appear that no person would be put forward for the Technical Training Award but the field had been narrowed to two in respect of the Teachers of the Handicapped, and he was proposing to put forward the two persons names.

George Pacey told the Committee briefly about the excellent performance of the Exchange Students at the Tauranga Conference, commenting that they had “stolen the show”.

Guest Speaker:

Liliana Coppetti, the exchange student from Argentina, talked to the Committee about her country. This was a most successful address and much appreciated by the members present. After her talk, Lili answered questions and at the conclusion the Chairman expressed the Committee’s thanks to her.

Supper was then served and at the conclusion Peter Young thanked Paul’s wife, Cherry, for her hospitality.
