MINUTES:   Minutes for the meeting held in October 1979 were taken as read.

GENERAL BUSINESS:

N.Z. Craftsman Training Foundation – Overseas Training Awards

Mike Barry explained this award, entries for which close on 31 July 1980. In view of the short time available to us to enter a nominee Mike has made enquiries of some of the larger firms for a suitable candidate. Watties have told him that they have an outstanding young tool and die maker who they would recommend but he is at present doing military service, returning to work on 21 July 1980. Mike will follow this up and if after an interview he is happy with the candidate he will arrange for his application to be completed.

The closing date for applications is a difficulty in that a new committee has little time in which to act and for this reason we recommend that attempts to find a suitable candidate should be undertaken by future committees in the latter half of their year. We propose to raise this matter again in February 1981.

Projects For Coming Year

We discussed the desirability of running a careers evening using the services of various members from a variety of callings to answer questions from young people seeking advice on job opportunities.

Interest was expressed in encouraging young Maoris to broaden their ambitions in job seeking.

Jack Seton recalled a form of directory which the club had used in past years which set out the names of various members who would be available to answer queries on their particular occupations.

Colin Blackmore expressed some reservations in view of the fact

that there is now an oversupply of labour and that few of us have any openings for job hunters.

Discussion followed on a possible need to interest young people in obtaining qualifications in occupations which could have greater importance in the future, such as computers and horticulture. It was suggested that we could discuss some of these aspects with Frank Crist.

Colin Blackmore wondered if there is any way in which we could run a project that would allow us to be seen to be supporting the police. All present were in favour of this principle and while it may cut across the Community Service Committee there must be some way in which it can come within our orbit. As a result of this discussion a suggestion was made that the Police Commander could be approached to join the Club.

Mike Barry will follow up these matters.

Some discussion followed on the subject of speakers and still with a slant on vocational field Jack Seton mentioned the possibility of getting a member of Parliament to speak to the Club on the subject of Saturday trading.

Another suggestion from Jack, was that members with speaking talents be asked to address the Club on the subject of their work with the idea of broadening the knowledge of members.

The meeting closed at 9.30 p.m. and the next meeting is set down for 5.30 p.m. on 11 August 1980 at Graeme Glass’ office.
