Minutes 1980-10-14 Youth Committee

MINUTES OF MEETING OF YOUTH COMMITTEE OF THE HASTINGS ROTARY CLUB HELD AT THE HOME OF JOHN HOLDERNESS ON 14 OCTOBER, 1980 AT 7.45 P.M.

PRESENT: Roy Batchelor (Chairman), John Holderness, Noel Louis, Bill Pascoe

APOLOGIES: David Fine, Gary Pike, Dick Seton, Dick Watson, Rei Apatu, Bryan Hutchinson, Basil Brooker

MINUTES: of meeting on 8 September, 1980 were read and confirmed.

STUDENT EXCHANGE:
Roy reported that the Club had agreed to accept Kala Hoffman of Laughton, Oklahoma in 1981. Two host families have been arranged and Bryan Hutchinson (Student Liaison) is confident that others will be forthcoming.

Noel asked whether the Club had a Student Counsellor. His recollection was that Phil May was appointed to assist Charlie Trask with a view to taking over from him but he was not aware of a replacement being appointed when Phil resigned from the Club. Roy will raise the matter with Directors.

Noel questioned the adequacy of the allowance paid by the Club to visiting students in view of continuing inflation and increased airmail postage charges. Hosts have found it necessary to augment the allowance. Roy will bring up the matter with Directors.

Student Exchange nominee, Simon Clark, is to visit the Club in December.

ROTARACT: Noel reported that while Rotaract was proceeding with its usual vigour and enthusiasm, it had some problems. Membership was just over 30, with a predominance of young women. A number of male members had resigned and more young men were badly needed.

Noel felt that the Club was hampered by lack of experience in business and money matters. Bill mentioned that Basil Brooker, who audits Rotaract’s accounts, was available if asked to advise on financial and accounting matters. Noel will bring this to the attention of Rotaract Directors.

The Oktoberfest 80 held on 11 October was very successful. Although Rotaract had been involved in similar festivals before, this was the first time they had been responsible solely for the arrangements.

Rotaract is looking at ways of increasing projects and is keen to help with Youth Committee’s boating trip.

Rotaract Birthday Ball is being held on 1 November. Roy, Noel, Byron Brook and others, and wives, are making up a small party to attend.

SCOUT JAMBOREE:
The Club, with other service organisations, has been asked to provide personnel for security watches at the Jamboree to be held at Tomoana Showgrounds from 29 December, 1980 to 13 January, 1981. Roy, Noel and Bill offered to help. Roy intends to approach other members of the Committee and will be asking other Committee Chairmen to canvass their members.

PICNIC: This is to be further considered in the New Year. Roy suggested a trip to Cape Kidnappers by tractor trailer. Waipatiki Beach was an alternative suggestion.

FISHING TRIP FDR CRIPPLED CHILDREN:
Roy reported that arrangements for the outing on Sunday 9 November were proceeding. A lady representative of the Crippled Children Society is preparing a list, to be available within the next day or so, of 16 children from Hastings, Flaxmere and Havelock North. Sufficient boats will be available from Club members.

Arrangements were discussed in some detail. Roy is to ascertain from Rotaract President, Sonja Lucas, the extent Rotaract wishes to be involved. Noel agreed to act as ‘beachmaster’ to supervise loading and unloading of boats, etc. Bill offered to attend to phone contacts with parents, etc. It was suggested that prizes should be given for the most successful catches and that a small gift should be made to all the children. Roy will approach Directors for a grant towards the expenses of the project.

GOLF TOURNAMENT: Roy is still waiting for a decision from Hastings Golf Club.

ATTENDANCE:  Disappointment was expressed at the small attendances at Committee meetings. It was felt that members were not giving Roy the support which he was entitled to expect.

NEXT MEETING: on 11 November at Bill Pascoe’s home, 115 Kenilworth Road, Hastings.

The meeting closed at 9.15 pm and was followed by supper provided by Dorothy. She and John were thanked for their hospitality.
