MATTERS ARISING FROM MINUTES:

John Cheer – Secretary read a testimonial from Principal of Hastings Boys High directed to J.R. McKenzie Educational Trust.  Glowing terms with a high recommendation.

Ron Giorgi reported on enquiries he has made. Father is R.S.A. member and help can be arranged but need some co-operation from father. Suggests seeing father with Frank Crist and Mike Barry to try to get his consent to his son going to University and if possible getting some help from him. Mike Barry had figures of budget which is minimal at total outlay of $3,400 p.a. and after bursary there is deficit of $1,160. Considers the boy, who he has interviewed is a very worthy type.

We have applied to McKenzie Trust. We will also apply to R.S.A., Rotary and possibly Sutherland Trust but the application dates for the latter make an approval too late to be effective in this year.

Ian Cameron can probably arrange holiday work for him.

School Leavers Handbook – Purchased 500 copies.

Hastings Boys High School   200
Karamu High School   200
Tenison [Tennyson] 30
St Johns   70

Tenison and St Johns are impressed with the book. Mike will arrange distribution. The Club has paid for these meantime but Mike would like us to raise this cost.

Mike raised question of raffle again.  He has discussed a prize of an air fare to Australia or Fiji with Ian Jaspers of Air New Zealand but that Company is most unlikely to donate prize. Keith Garland suggested a prize of meat and Ian Cameron can possibly help with this.

It was left to Mike to raise the question at the next Directors meeting to seek their approval or guidance.

…/2

– 2 –

Vocational Tour – Nothing much to add and nothing will happen until next year.

Jubilee Trust – Mike discussed with Colin Young. No problems and we can use their funds to assist with the Cheer boy.

Children in Care of Salvation Army – Nothing has come up yet.

GENERAL BUSINESS:

Education Trust Fund – Nothing specific to add but Mike spoke on his keenness to set up this scheme. He wants to discuss the prospects with Ewing Robertson to seek his views.

Ian Cameron spoke on his Company’s policy as far as donations are concerned and expressed doubts as to the chances of obtaining loans from companies. Graeme also expressed similar views.

N.Z. Craftsman Training Award – Mike expressed dissatisfaction at the procedure of the Committee in selecting the successful candiate [candidate].  The realities did not seem to tie up with the prospectus in that there was no certainty of a job. Mike intends to express his criticisms to the Committee.

There being no further business the meeting was closed at 9.25 p.m.

Next meeting Monday 8th December 7.30 p.m., 62 McHardy Street.
AT THE HOME OF GRAEME GLASS.

Confirmed
