HASTINGS ROTARY CLUB – VOCATIONAL COMMITTEE

MINUTES OF MEETING HELD AT THE OFFICE OF TONY CROSS
5.30 PM MONDAY 9 FEBRUARY, 1981

PRESENT:   Mike Barry (Chairman), Tony Cross, Ron Giorgi, Ewing Robertson, Dick Spence, Vel Velvin.

APOLOGIES:   Ian Cameron, Graeme Glass.

MINUTES:   Minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

BUSINESS ARISING:   John Cheer. Ron Giorgi reported having met John’s parents. The father’s attitude was encouraging and may result in some financial assistance. Meanwhile a further application will be made to the J R McKenzie Trust.

Education Trust Fund.   A useful discussion with Ewing Robertson ensued on the question of finding similar ventures. Ewing indicated that the E & C Bank might help at their grants review in mid-year. Mike will complete application for Ron’s signature.

GENERAL:   Mike Barry had progressed the concept of the committee organising a private exchange of a local craftsman with a West German who would work in a branch of primary industry. He had requested information from the West German embassy and tentatively nominated Ian Sellwood of Watties as a potential candidate.

Vel Velvin suggested that the Rotary Overseas Vocational Exchange scheme might cover this situation. Ewing Robertson undertook to follow up this possibility. It was generally agreed that West Germany would be a good choice for obtaining engineering experience but there was no finality of opinion whether the exchange Should represent the agricultural or engineering field.

The meeting closed at 6.45 pm.

NEXT MEETING:   This was set down for 5.30 pm on Monday 9 March at the office of Ewing Robertson.
