Minutes 1981-04-14 Youth Committee

MINUTES OF MEETING OF YOUTH COMMITTEE OF HASTINGS ROTARY CLUB HELD AT THE HOME OF GARY PIKE ON 14 APRIL, 1981 AT 7.45 P.M.

PRESENT:   Roy Batchelor (Chairman), Gary Pike, David Green, Rei Apatu, Brian Usherwood, John Holderness, Bill Pascoe.

APOLOGIES:   Noel Louis

MINUTES:   of meeting held on 10 March were read and confirmed.

MATTERS ARISING:
Roy reported that Secretary Frank had written to Hastings Golf Club, expressing thanks for the Club’s cooperation in the recent tournament and asking for a date to be pencilled [penciled] in for next year.  With donations still to come in from 3 sponsors, and after paying all expenses, the nett return from the tournament to date is $1,445.

ROTARACT:   Changeover night was on 28 March.  Several Committee members and their wives attended.

Directors made a grant of $50 to Rotaract, from profits, for their help at the Club barbecue.

Membership is still declining and is a matter for concern.

David Green suggested that sponsored advertisements in Saturday evening’s papers might attract new members.

John recounted his experience in speaking to 3 young people about Rotaract. Their reaction was that they were “in no way” interested. They did not give reasons.

Rotaract will be selling tickets and ‘manning’ gates at the Highland Games at Easter weekend. In view of their dwindling numbers they would appreciate assistance from Rotarians. Roy, David Green and Bill Pascoe offered to help.  Roy will make an appeal to members through the Bulletin.

RYLA:   Directors have decided to send two awardees again this year at a total cost of about $300.

Rei reported that he had received 3 applications – 2 were from unsuccessful applicants from last year. He is expecting a further 4.

A panel comprising Roy, Rei, David Green, Brian Usherwood and Noel Louis, was set up to interview candidates and make a selection.

The panel will meet in Frank Darroch’s office. Frank will be available to help.

AUCTION:   The auction held at the Club meeting earlier in the day realised $546. Expenses will be about $27. The proceeds will be used to pay the Club’s contribution to the sponsorship of 2 candidates to Outward Bound. Any surplus goes into the Project Fund. Thanks were expressed to the auctioneers, Rex McLay and Peter McLean.

STUDENT EXCHANGE:
Kala Hoffman is happily settled.

An enthusiastic letter has been received from Simon Clark about his experiences in the U.S.A.

A Miss Debbie O’Shea was said to be interested in becoming an Exchange Student. Roy will confer with Brian [Bryan] Hutchinson (who was not at the meeting) and Charlie Trask about the procedure.

FAMILY INDOOR GAMES EXHIBITION:
A letter was read from the Recreation Officer of the City of Hastings giving information about a Family Indoor Games Exhibition to be held at Hastings Cultural Centre for 10 days during the May School holidays.

The Recreation Officer appealed for persons to help in looking after the entrance foyer and in the supervision of activities. It was decided that Roy would make an appeal for helpers at a luncheon meeting.

NEXT MEETING:
on 12 May at Rei Apatu’s place.

The meeting closed at about 9 p.m. and was followed by supper served by Pamela.
She and Gary were thanked for their hospitality.
