Minutes 1982-06-08 Youth Committee

MINUTES OF MEETING OF YOUTH COMMITTEE OF HASTINGS ROTARY CLUB HELD AT MILK TREATMENT STATION, WILLIAMS ST., ON TUESDAY, 8 JUNE 1982 AT 5.15 P.M.

PRESENT: Paul Jones (Chairman), Sandy Struthers, Rohan Kidd, Roy Batchelor, Des Peryer, Bill Pascoe.

APOLOGIES: Cliff Cox, Darryl le Claire

MINUTES: of meeting held on 3 May 1982 were read and confirmed.

ROTARACT: Rotaract 10th Birthday Ball was “a great success”. Roy had hoped to attend but unfortunately was unable to do so. Roy attended a Rotaract barbecue on 6 June and also a recent Club meeting when there was a ‘raid’ from the Central Hawkes Bay Club. Both were very successful.

Rotaract continues to have a membership problem. Present membership is 26. The comment was made that while Rotaract seemed always to have plenty of guests, few of the guests became members. It was thought that there was possibly a lack of ‘follow up’.

Rotaract Annual Conference is being held at Hastings during the weekend 3-4 July. Our Club (through Youth Committee) is supporting Rotaract by helping at the luncheon on 3 July. The commitment is to heat and serve a curry meal cooked and provided by Rotaract. It was agreed to ask Directors to make funds available from the auction proceeds so that the Club caterers could be employed to heat the food. The caterers are available. Arrangements will be made for a small party of Rotary wives to serve the meal.

GOLF CLASSIC: After meeting all expenses, there was a surplus of $1,786. This is to be made available for a barbecue facility at Fantasyland. Members strongly recommended that future Youth Committees adopt the Golf Classic as a regular part of their programme.

AUCTION: This was an outstanding success, clearing something over $700 nett.

OUTWARD BOUND: There were only 2 applicants for sponsorship, namely David Bird, an employee of the Milk Treatment Station, and Alan Robson (son of Robbie), a joiner. Both were interviewed and found suitable, and were selected. Paul said that funds were available from the proceeds of the auction for a further sponsorship if a suitable applicant should become available before the end of the financial year.

RYLA: The successful candidates attended the Ryla Week during the May holidays. They are to speak to the Club in the near future.

STUDENT EXCHANGE: Paul reported that there were only 2 applicants, namely, Rana Apatu, a Maori youth, and Vivienne Rarere, a Maori girl. The applicants were interviewed by a Panel consisting of President Charlie, Chairman Paul, Roy, Anne Hutchinson and Eric? McCroskery (Group 10 Student Exchange Liaison Officer). Vivienne was selected, subject to the approval of the Directors. Paul and Roy said that Vivienne was an outstanding young lady. Her father is a Policeman, her mother a school teacher. She is a Prefect at Hastings Girls’ High School. The Principal, Miss Kelt, described her as “an outstanding girl who has the respect of everyone”. Her choices of country are U.S.A., Germany, and Australia.

Members congratulated Roy on his selection as Club Student Exchange Liaison Officer for next year. They were confident that his interest in youth and experience in Student Exchange made him ideal for the position.

SOCIAL FUNCTION: This is now to be held at Gordon Lee’s restaurant on Wednesday, 16 June. Cost $12 per head for a 10 course Chinese meal, refreshments BYO. At the suggestion of Vice-President Ewing, the function is to be open to all Club members. Gordon can cater for up to 70.

THANKS: This being the Committee’s last meeting, Paul thanks members for their support during the year. Roy, on behalf of the members, expressed appreciation of Paul’s leadership as Chairman, mentioning in particular his attention to detail.

Sandy was thanked for making his office available for the meeting and for his hospitality.
