Minutes 1984-05-01 Club Service Committee

MINUTES OF MEETING OF CLUB SERVICE COMMITTEE OF HASTINGS ROTARY CLUB HELD AT HASTINGS CITY ADMINISTRATION BUILDING ON 1 MAY 1984 AT 5.15 P.M.

PRESENT:  John Mills (Chairman), Cyril Wilkie, Ted Tucker, Bryce Jones, Brian Usherwood, Charlie Trask, Keith Sands, Bill Pascoe

APOLOGIES:  Frank Crist, Bill Langford

MEMBERSHIP/CLASSIFICATION:
There was mention of the following prospective members –

Norm Lowe – a retired Rotarian from Wanganui, now living at 521 Frederick St.  John will contact him and provide information about local Clubs.

Bob Lynch – A.N.Z. Bank.  Max will invite him to a Rotary luncheon.

Alister Rodgers – David Green’s successor at the Guardian Royal Exchange Assurance Company.  Doubtful whether he is interested in becoming a member.

Haldane Scougall – formerly a member of Hastings Club but more recently a member of Napier Club.  Action is in train for him to return to Hastings Club under his old classification of “Cleaning Services”.

Change of Classification – David Fine has retired from Banking.  It was decided to recommend to Directors that Secretary Frank approach David about a change of classification to one more appropriate to his present situation.

CLUB’S 60th BIRTHDAY:
The response from members has been disappointing, only 26 couples having expressed the intention of attending.

MAN FRIDAY:
From his experience in the position, Cyril thought that the duties should be shared by 2 members acting on alternate days.

WINDSOR LODGE:
Cyril referred to the new buildings the City Council is having erected to replace the old Lodge.  He explained for the benefit of members that when the Lodge was constructed some 30 years ago by altering a house which stood on the site, Hastings Rotary had given the Council a guarantee to provide £1000 ($2000) towards the cost.  This had involved the Club in several projects and much hard work over a period of about 3 years before the undertaking was met.  Cyril considered that means should be found to ensure that the Club’s contribution to the Lodge was not lost sight of.

In discussion which followed, it was suggested that the position might be met if a photograph of the original Lodge, with a memorial of its history and Rotary’s involvement, could be displayed in the new building.  John said that the Council had a suitable photograph.  It was resolved to recommend to Directors that the matter be taken up with the Council.

Cyril also suggested that the old building not be demolished but removed to a Council section elsewhere for use by needy people.  John said that the Council had considered shifting the building but had found it unsuitable for removal.

THANKS:  This being the final meeting of the Committee, members expressed appreciation to John of his leadership during the year and extended best wishes for a successful year as President.  John in turn thanked members for their loyal Support.
