MINUTES OF HASTINGS ROTARY CLUB DIRECTORS MEETING

HELD AT THE MILK COORPORATION [CORPORATION] ON TUESDAY 18 AUGUST 1987 AT 5.15 PM

PRESENT:  President Rod Naylor, Sandy Struthers, Alan Walker, John Mills, Ian Sutherland, Hugh Douglas.

APOLOGIES:   Bruce White [Whyte], Frank Crist, Graeme Robson, Vel Velvin, Ian Cameron.

MINUTES:   From previous meeting circulated and read.

CORRESPONDENCE:

INWARDS:

1.   Resignation received from Brian Gurney and Doug Huggat [Dug Huggett].

2.   Rotary House appeal from R.D.U. seeking a donation. Letter received.
Moved John. Seconded Sandy. Carried.

3.   Leave of Absence – Derek Burns   2 July – 21 August
– Alan Scott   1 September – 22 September

4.   Kate Elger seeking donation for her son to travel overseas to Wrestling.
Request declined.

5.   L Baradel [Barradell] having problems with travel to U.S.A. Frank following up.
Moved Received Alan. Seconded Colin. Carried.

FINANCIAL:   No report.

COMMUNITY:   Alan – Bowls organised for 28 September 1987 or Friday 2 October if wet.

Town and Country Brian Aitken to be guest speaker.

Rotary Fountain outside library now felt to be unsuitable. After a lot of discussion it was felt that a suitable letter be sent to Council suggesting that the fountain be converted to a garden.

YOUTH:   Ian – Fantasyland Music Festival to be organised again. Preliminary work is under way.

An approach to be made to Youth Council to see if they could provide Speakers on one of our Club days.

CLUB SERVICE:   No report.

INTERNATIONAL:   Hugh – Proposed sponsorship of teacher to China is to be this Committee’s main project for the year.

A teacher is required to teach English.

Dr McKenzie has a teacher available to go to China who is presently teaching in Wellington.

Sponsorship of this teacher’s travel arrangements are proposed as this Club’s support to the project. Approximately $1,199 return is likely to be the cost involved.

Tenure to be one year in China.

The Committee is to raise part of the funds for the project and a number of fund raising ideas are being investigated.

That the directors put into place a sponsored teacher proposal to China for one year initially in conjunction with the Hastings City Council.

GENERAL BUSINESS:

1.   Arthritis Foundation Street Appeal, Monday 5 October, accepted as one of our street appeals for this year.

2.   Polio Plus. Discussion took place on what way our Club should support this Rotary Project. Our contribution was expected to be in the region of $8,000 spread over three years.

It was felt best to hold this matter over until after the District Governor has visited the Club so that further information can be obtained.

3.   Paul Harris Fellow. Len Webb was nominated for this award.
