MINUTES OF HASTINGS ROTARY CLUB YOUTH COMMITTEE
HELD AT NBNZ, QUEEN STREET AT 5.15 PM
WEDNESDAY, 13 APRIL 1994

PRESENT:

Brian Coe, Jim Hurford, Ian Lawson, John Spittle.

APOLOGIES:

MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING:

Read and approved.

MATTERS ARISING:

Brian Epplett to advise back on developments on possible charity auction with all local clubs participating proceeds to go to D.A.R.E. for vehicle.

No developments on information from Police in Christchurch as Terry Betty Hastings Police has resigned. John Spittle following up with his replacement, to report back next meeting.

RYLA:

No nominations for Kevin Williams.

Rotary Youth Exchange:

No response from letters to schools. Cost too high?

GENERAL BUSINESS:

Long discussion on direction of Youth Committee and possible future projects.

Felt that most pressing problem in the Community today is Youth unemployment.

Felt that Government is doing all it can with Task Force Green.

Considered that local companies/businesses and firms should be encouraged to employ trainee staff. This could be coordinated by Rotary Club as a project:

1.   Placing young people in jobs suited to their particular skills and interest.
2.   Objective long term retained in work force for minimum of 12 months.
3.   If Rotary could set up scheme for 100 local businesses to take on one trainee staff member each it is felt this would make an impact on the problem.

If it could be developed throughout NZ through all Rotary Clubs perhaps it could make a difference to the unemployment problem.

This matter to be discussed further at next meeting hopefully to present recommendation to Directors.

Tim Barley Exchange Student to NSW returns to NZ in May with his exchange Scott Welsh.
