Born Gore, 1 November 1928, son of Adam Monaghan and Agnes (nee Burnet); married (1) Helen Monteith Roach, daughter of Gordon H and Edith Mary Roach, 1956 (died 1982); (2) Olga Brooke-Taylor, daughter of Roydon and Ida Winifred Brooke-Taylor, 1985; two sons one daughter.
Education: Edendale Primary, Gore High School, Otago University, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Law 1953. Former Honorary Naval Relations Officer for Napier (Lieutenant Commander). Admitted as Solicitor 1952, Barrister 1953, admitted 1954 as Partner in Napier legal firm now known as Carlile Dowling, later Senior Partner; Secretary, Council Member, President (1975-77), Hawke’s Bay District Law Society; Council member, NZ Law Society, 1975-77; appointed a Crown Prosecutor, 1978; Member, NZ Law Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal, 1983-91, Deputy Chairman 1989-91, President, Napier Jaycees, 1959; Charter Member, Scinde Lions, 1970; Council Member: Hawke’s Bay Automobile Association 1968-76, NZ Automobile Association 1970-76; Former Member, NZ Urban Public Passenger Council; Member, Napier City Council 1968-71; Past Executive Member: Napier Development Association, YMCA, 1970’s; Past President, Hawke’s Bay Wine and Food Society; Former Member , Springhill Trust.
