THE NAPIER CLUB BULLETIN
(for the week beginning July 7th, 1975)

ABOUT OURSELVES: We, of course, are the Club Bulletin.  The Editor, like every other Editor before him, is determined that the Bulletin should play its full and proper part in the progress of the Club.  What, then, is our purpose and task?  This, is how Rotary International would have us see it:

“The job of the Club Bulletin is to stimulate interest and improve attendance, announce the program of the forthcoming meeting, promote fellowship, contribute to the Rotary education of all members; and to report news of the Club, of its members and of the world-wide Rotary program.”

It has been said also that a good Club Bulletin is as basic for a Rotary Club as a local newspaper is for a community.  A Past District Governor, at a recent Rotary Assembly at Taupo declared that “The Club Bulletin is the principal public relations agent of any Rotary Club”.

Since the Bulletin is so important to the life and work of the Rotary Club it cannot be properly produced without the co operation of every Club member, but more of that anon.

CHANGE OVER NIGHT:  The first meeting of the Rotary Year 1975-76 was a dinner function at the Colonial Lounge, Tamatea, last Monday night, June 30th.  The change of Club Officers was marked in the customary manner with retiring President Jack investing incoming President Hugh with the Rotary Chain of Office.  The formalities concluded with speeches by the two Presidents.

Visitors welcomed were:-  Past District Governor Bill De Costa; Tony Foley (President, Napier West); Bishop Manu Bennett (Taradale); Harley Taylor (Napier Lions); Eoin Pope (Napier Jaycees); Owen Brown (Master in Charge, Interact N.B.H.S.) and Rotary Exchange Students Lyn Marie Hagerty (Western Australia) and Kristin Ross (British Columbia).

Attendance:  The number present including wives of Rotarians and visitors was 171.  The Club figures were –  Present 76 (70.7%), Apologies 18, Silent 9.

The Sunshine Box realised $39.57 and the winner of the Japanese Bear was David Sabiston.

THE PRESIDENT:  Fellows.  I am looking forward to my year as your President and am confident that the team chosen to lead our Club for the next 12 months will fulfil all expectations.  My thanks to those who have accepted office.  I know we will work well together to serve our community and to maintain good fellowship within our Club. – Hugh.

GET BEHIND HIM FELLOWS:  Our new President Hugh has a good Rotary ambition in that he wants to be a good leader.  He wants this to be a good Rotary Club, with good attendance, good fellowship, good programs, good participation by every committee, every member.  To do this he will need your help.  Let’s all pitch in and do our part.  It will be good for us, our Club, our community, our world.

As a great Rotarian once said – “Either lead, follow, or get out of the way”.  More Rotarians in Club, more Rotary in Rotarians.  That’s it.

CHIT CHAT:  Congratulations to John Grimoldby on his appointment as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons; to birthday boy Keith MacEwan 11/7(4); and to those who celebrate Wedding Anniversaries – Jeanette and Bob Hamilton, and Monica and Sam Haraldsen on July 6th, and Mary and Ernie Gee on July 10th.  Our best wishes to Amy Langley who is in hospital.

PROGRAM FOR MONDAY NEXT

The Speaker – Mrs Laurel Tierney, a fresh water biologist with the Dept. of Agriculture & Fisheries on the subject of “The Lake Tutira Project.”

The introduction will be made by Owen Somerset Smith and the Vote of Thanks will be moved by Richard Spence.

Fellowship and Cash Desk:  Bob Hamilton, Stan Bradshaw, Harold Wrightson and Brian Young.

Stewards:  Bob Allen, Alan Angus, Peter Atkins, Wally Atherfold, Buster Balfour and Ross Banks.

Top Table:  Hugh Heaps, Leon Simkin, John Perry, Malcolm Fergusson, Richard Spence, Bob Dockery, Peter Hobbs

Rotary needs more men big enough to be small enough to be used.

One of the ways to defend Rotary is to attend Rotary.
