SOUTHERN HAWKES BAY FEDERATION – Woodville Institute

On the day of the official opening of the hall, a tablet was placed to the right of the hall entrance stating “This stone was laid by Mrs. N.M. Burnett, through whose generosity the W.I. [Woodville Institute] was enabled to erect this hall, August 17 1937”.

Mrs. Burnett not only donated a valuable section for the hall but also gave a generous donation towards the cost of the £1700 hall. She, as well as all the members, worked very hard fund-raising before the hall was built and also afterwards when concerts and dances were held in the new hall. The seating for the new hall presented a problem so to save expense the women with the help of some of the men actually assembled all the forms (to seat 400) themselves – a noble effort.

The hall is now freehold and is let to the general public – different rates for different functions.
