Havelock North Boulevard Day

Thursday, November 4

Once a year Hawke’s Bay has the chance to experience the atmosphere and streetside savings of the Havelock North Boulevard Day.

This Thursday, Havelock North will start their end of year celebrations early by offering unsurpassed bargains and savings for one day only.

The day’s traditional format hasn’t changed. Stalls will be set out all day from about 9am. Retailers enter into the spirit in any way they want and many will be wearing fancy dress.

Meanwhile, community organisations are invited to participate. Traditionally, they add to the variety by setting up stalls offering anything from cakes to sewing to sausage sizzles.

As the millennium is an important event to Havelock North, this year’s celebrations is focused on Te Mata Peak and “awakening the giant”.

In recognition of this, there will be a limited edition of collectable T-shirts and tea-towels designed by Jane Gray for sale on the day.

Havelock North Business Association president, Michael Poppelwell says the village is one of the few places left that still has its own genuine Boulevard Day. It’s one of the main events on the calender and in typical Havelock North style, is a tradition that has been honoured and eagerly anticipated by retailers and public alike.

“Its been going on for about 30 years and there’s always a special family atmosphere. The days have been very successful. It’s a busy day for retailers and a real boon for customers.”

“It usually makes for a fun, light-hearted day. Shoppers can come and enjoy the free parking and the laid back, clean, and picturesque village atmosphere and lovely gardens.”

There’s a good mix of traditional and new retailers in the village. Many of them are owner-operated, family businesses. They are independent and offer good, old fashioned service.

Shopping in the village is a pleasant experience any time of the year but with the added thrill of “millennium fever” plus hundreds of streetside and instore bargains, this would have to be one of the best shopping days of the year.
