“MARAMA”
POPULAR COMEDY-OPERA.
AN ALL NEW ZEALAND PRODUCTION.
The third performance of the delightful comedy-drama “Marama,” an all-New Zealand production, was given in the Grand Opera House on Saturday night before a large and appreciative audience. There is a well-constructed plot of interest and amuse, and entertaining comedy and catchy songs are blended into a creditable and most artistic piece of work. Mr Archie Don is responsible for the music, and Mr H. S. Ribbands for the words. The opera abounds in humour, haunting airs, artistic grouping, and in beautiful scenes, while Maori customs in all their quaint settings are depicted. Ballets by experienced dancers, poi dances by dainty Maori maidens, chorus singing by talented vocalists, and hakas by full-blooded Maoris are some of the spectacular incidents which make of “Marama” a fine performance to be thoroughly enjoyed. Mr W. H. Nikera is in charge of the dances. Miss Mere Amohau is a charming leading lady, an actress of ability and an accomplished singer, and Mr. Noel Allan sings and acts well in the role of Alan Dale. Prominent in the cast are Miss Marian Bainbridge as Lady Betty, Mr Leon Fail as Lord Aucklington, whose humour is bright an original, Mr Noho Toki as Huia, Miss Bertha Manson and Mr Harry Poppelwell in the characters of youthful lovers; their songs and dances are very acceptable, and Mr Frank Byrne, as a stately Governor-General, capably fills the part. The orchestra is under the baton of Mr Archie Don, the composer, and the opera is produced under the able direction of Mr Scott Colville. There will be a repetition to-night.
