Newspaper Article 1935 – Obituary – Mr Nathaniel Hewson Beamish

OBITUARY

MR NATHANIEL HEWSON BEAMISH

A well-known resident of Hastings, Mr Nathaniel Hewson Beamish, passed away this morning at his  Hastings residence after a short illness.  The late Mr Beamish was born at Kilkern, near Marton, on January 10, 1866, and was the third son of the late Mr N. E. Beamish, of “Stoneycroft,” Hastings.

Educated at the Napier Grammar School, at Warwick House and later at Christ’s College, Christchurch, he afterwards spent some years on his father’s station at Whana Whana.

Later he took up an  area of 20,000 acres at Mohaka and it is a tribute to the capabilities of the late Mr Beamish as a farmer that in six years he more than doubled the carrying capacity of that property. After selling out at Mohaka, Mr Beamish took over “Paraetotara” Station at Makaretu and during his residence in that district was the principal promoter and for three years chairman of directors of the Onga Onga butter factory. He was also tor three years chairman of the Onga Onga branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, and of the Waipawa County Council.

Some 20 years ago, Mr Beamish retired from farming and came to reside in Hastings. He had more or less lived in retirement ever since, although local body affairs claimed his interest from 1917 to 1921, during which period he was a member of the Borough Council.

During the later years of his life Mr Beamish took a particularly keen interest in the economic problems of the Dominion, more particularly of the farming community, and was the founder of the N.Z Co-operative Union. A man of exceptional capability and of foresight, his death will be widely mourned. In 1897 Mr Beamish married Miss Margaret Allen, of Wairoa, by whom he is survived. The sympathy of the community will be extended to his widow in her bereavement.
