Hastings Wins Douglas Rose Bowl

DANNEVIRKE, August 14.  [1939]

Despite severe weather, teams from Hastings, Napier, Woodville and Dannevirke fired a challenge match for the Douglas Rose Bowl on the Dannevirke Gun Club’s range during the weekend. The Hastings team won the trophy with 69, J. Mills and D. Campbell both getting the possible of 15 birds. Of the total of 75 only six birds were missed by this team. Woodville was second with 68 (R.G. Smith 15), and Napier third with 65 (C. Holt 15). Dannevirke, holders, scored 63.

Six-bird amateur teams match: Dannevirke, 24-1; Hastings, 22-2; Dannevirke No. 2, 20-3.

Nine-bird match: Wrigley, Holt, Gordon, Mills and Smith, 9; Campbell, Gardner, Wiffin, McGaffin, Horne and Clinch, 8.

Nine-bird match, amateurs included: Williams, Gordon, Moran, Fuge and E. Sargent, 9; Wrigley, Macfarlane, Fearon, J. Mills, C. Wiffin, Campbell and Franklin. 8.

Amateur competitors: G. Peters, 9; Macfarlane, 8; Petersen, Brian and Doggett, 8; K. Taylor, 7; Ben Doggett, 6.

Six-bird eye-opener: D. M. Campbell, 6; T. A. Wrigley, 6; E. Sargent, 6; C. Holt, 6; J. Fearon, 5; R. G. Smith, 5; A Clinch, 6; J. Mills, 5; H. Gardner, 5; C.V. Petersen, 5; J. C. Horne, 6; C. Mackie, 5; J. Syme, 5; B. Franklin, 6; G. Peters, 5; Ben Doggett, 5.
