Farewell Presentation At Hastings High School

Miss E. McMullan, who has resigned her position after 18 years’ teaching experience on the school staff, was farewelled at a ceremony held in the Hastings High School assembly hall on Friday afternoon.

In addition to the school pupils, there were present representatives of the High School Board of Governors, the Parents’ Association and many Old Pupils. Speeches in recognition of Miss McMullan’s long and faithful term of office and appreciation of her valued services were made by the principal, Mr W. A. G. Penlington, Mr E. J. W. Hallet, chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr E. D. Anderson, for the Parents Association, and Miss G Symes, on behalf of the Old Pupils’ Association.

The speakers paid tribute to the fine work Miss McMullan has rendered the school, the keenness with which she has furthered its activities, both academic and sporting, and the continued interest she has shown in her pupils after they have left the school.

Miss McMullan suitably replied, and expressed her regret at leaving the school and its associations.

Presentations of a beautiful box of orchids and freezias, and an inscribed silver flower-bowl on a mirror-base, were made by Old Girls, and a silver sandwich tray and server by present pupils. The girls of Form V Commercial, of which Miss McMullan was form-mistress, presented her with a handsome handbag, and members of Purple House gave their former house-mistress a scenic photograph by George Chance.

After the ceremony, members of the school staff entertained Miss McMullan at afternoon tea, and she was the recipient of many useful gifts, including a Wedgwood coffee-set, which they hoped would serve as a reminder of happy associations in the past.
