Large Attendance At British Women’s Club First Guest Evening

Members of the British Women’s Overseas Club held their first guest evening on Tuesday, when an attendance of more than 200, including visitors from other parts of Hawke’s Bay, was recorded. The outstanding success of the evening testifies to the club’s progress during the three months it has been in existence.

The function was held in the Hawke’s Bay Women’s Service Club, whose rooms were kindly lent for the occasion.

The entertainment was provided by the Havelock North Players, who presented two plays, produced by Mrs. I. McLeod. The first, entitled “Mr Sampson,” had as its characters: Caroline, Mrs. D. Christie; Catherine, Mrs F. Miller; Mr. Sampson, Mr Godward; “Runaway Bride” followed, with the following cast; Mrs. Blogg, Mrs. Buchanan; Joe Purton, Mr. B. Hill; Mrs. Wilmer, Mrs. McLeod; Miss Cridgeley, Mrs Mauldin.

On behalf of the club, the performers were thanked for their splendid effort by Dr. Antony Reeve.

Several pianoforte items, played by Miss Pounceford, Havelock North, were also appreciatively received. Supper was followed by an informal social hour.

Members of the committee on the stage for the singing of “Land of Hope and Glory” and the National Anthem at the close of the evening were: Mrs Malcolm Mason (president), Miss M. Silvester (secretary), Mesdames D. H. Stewart (treasurer), Laing, Wainscott, Pryor, Walker and Sunley.
