MR JAMES WEST

Mr James West, who died in Hastings on Tuesday at the age of 83 years, had resided in Hastings for almost 60 years. He was particularly well known in racing circles as a former trainer and owner of trotting horses.

Born in Dunedin, Mr West came to Hastings as a young man and was employed at Borthwick’s freezing works at Paki Paki. Later, he went to the Tomoana works, where he was employed for about 40 years.

Pre-deceased by his wife about six years ago, Mr West left a family of four daughters and six sons. The daughters are Mesdames J. Edward (Waipukurau), J. Asplet (Masterton), N. Duley (Auckland) and R. Pickard (Greytown), and the sons are Messrs James, Frank, Bert and Eric West, of Hastings, William West (Wellington) and Fred West (Nelson).

The funeral took place this morning at the Hastings cemetery.
