Newspaper Article 1949 – First Win For Ten Years

FIRST WIN FOR TEN YEARS

CHRIST’S COLLEGE had its first win for ten years over its number one cricket rival, Christchurch Boys’ High School, this year. The match finished, in true story-book style, a few minutes before time on the second day, the last school batsman being bowled with the last ball of the last over. College’s superiority was in its bowling. E.J.D. Newbigin, a right-hander, who bowls very fast for a schoolboy, took 10 for 77 in the two innings. Top scorers were G.C.P. Beadel (College), with 95, and J.D. Lawson (School) 88. The capable wicketkeeper for College was H.R. Lowry, a nephew of Tom Lowry.
