Newspaper Article 1949 – Memorial to Freezing Industry Pioneer Planned for HB

Memorial to Freezing Industry Pioneer Planned for H.B.

Tentative plans to erect a memorial in Waikoko gardens, Tomoana Showgrounds, to the late Mr. William Nelson, founder of Hawke’s Bay’s freezing industry and vendor of the original Waikoko house and property to the Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society, were discussed at yesterday’s meeting of the body.

It was a curious thing that no memorial existed to a man who had had such a great influence on the prosperity of New Zealand, said Mr. C. Douglas. Mr. Nelson was the founder of the freezing industry, and it was fitting that his memory should be perpetuated.

The president, Mr. Lachlan Maclean, said that no man had done more for his country than Mr. Nelson. The proposal for a memorial, which it was thought might take the form an archway, met with the unanimous approval of the meeting, the matter being deferred for discussion at a special meeting of the society in May.
