GEORGE LOWE TRAMPING IN KAIMANAWAS

Mr. George Lowe and Mr. G. Pratt, members of the British Antarctic team, spent last Easter weekend tramping over familiar ground in the Kaimanawa mountain ranges. They were accompanied by Mr. Lester Masters and Dr. D. A. Bathgate, both of Hastings.

The party arrived at Ngamatea Station (63 miles from Hastings off the main road to Taihape) on Good Friday. They slept at the station overnight.

On Easter Saturday the group split with Mr. Masters and Dr. Bathgate going into the Kaimanawa Ranges, hunting and bird-watching. Mr. Lowe and Mr. Pratt headed deeper into the bush and hill country and made their first stop at the Log Cabin hut.

On Sunday the two camped out in perfect weather after making their base at the Kiwi Hut. On Easter Monday the two arrived back at the starting-point, coming through Kuripapango.

Mr. Lowe described the tramp as one of the best he had experienced for years. It is nine years since Mr. Lowe last tramped over that country and he had found some changes. He remarked particularly on the recovery of vegetation.
