Southland (holders of the New Zealand Cup), Auckland, Canterbury and Hawke’s Bay all won their first matches in the first grade of the 31st annual Dominion tournament of the New Zealand Basketball Association at Hataitai Park today. The weather was sunny but cold.

Results:- First grade: – Auckland 39, Wanganui 23, Rotorua 37; Southland Country 29; Canterbury 46, Matamata 25; Southland 37, Otago 27; Hawke’s Bay 32, Manawatu 17.

Second grade: – Wairarapa 25, South Canterbury 25; Tauranga 33, Nelson 29; Wellington 47, Taranaki 18; Waikato 35, South Auckland 18; Te Kawau 25, Northland 23; Hutt Valley 36, Eastern Bay of Plenty 16; Tauranga 28, South Canterbury 24; Nelson 26, Taranaki 23.

Third grade: Poverty Bay 34, Manawatu Minor 16; Temuka 27, West Coast 16; Putaruru 39, Horowhenua 16; Waikato sub-associations 33, Thames Valley 24; Canterbury sub-association 32, Ashburton 32; Marlborough 26, Taranaki Minor 21; Temuka 27, Horowhenua 15; Thames Valley 31, West Coast 18.

Fourth grade: Auckland Minor 39, Hawke’s Bay Minor 23; Poverty Bay-East Coast 34, Wellington Minor 21; Hokitika 35, Hutt Valley Minor 17; Otago Minor 35, Kaikoura 14; North Otago 22, Central King Country 19; Buller 32, Wairoa 26; Wellington Minor 26, Hawke’s Bay Minor 22.
