Newspaper Article 1962 – HB Party at Windsor Castle

HB party at Windsor Castle

These Hawke’s Bay members of the Girls’ Life Brigade are photographed in the grounds of Windsor Castle, near London, where they were the guests of Lady Freyberg, wife of the Constable of Windsor Castle.

The party, in London for the world-wide celebration of the movement’s diamond jubilee, are, from left: Miss Anne Nixon, Napier; Mrs M. Duncan, Napier, who is paying a return visit to the Shetland Island after 38 years in New Zealand; Miss Melva Mildenhall, Hastings; and Major Mary Tait: Napier.

Lord Freyberg, who was Governor-General of New Zealand from 1946 to 1952, lives in the castle precincts and the gardens of his house include the ramparts of the Round Tower.

The 900-year-old castle is the favourite home of the Queen and her family and attracts many visitors to the beautiful State apartments and chapel.

The Hawke’s Bay party also attended a review at Horse Guards Parade, a service in Westminster Abbey, a civic reception by the Corporation of London at the Guildhall and the annual rally at the Royal Albert Hall.
