HB sculler twice beats NZ champion

Hawke’s Bay top sculler, Tony Bone, scored double success at the Rotorua Rowing Club‘s open regatta on Blue Lake on Saturday, while his clubmates gained two second placings and three thirds in various events.

Bone won both the senior singles and the handicap singles, on both occasions beating the current New Zealand champion, D. Molesworth, Whakatane. His effort in the handicap was a particularly fine one.

Starting from scratch Bone suffered considerable interference on his way up through the field but was still able to get through and go on to win by three lengths.

The senior fours and also the maiden fours gained second-placings for the Hawke’s Bay Club, whose day’s honours were increased by third placings for the maiden eight, senior doubles and novice fours.

Feature race of the day was the senior eights which was a terrific race with the N.Z.-title holders, Wellington, sprinting away over the last 200 metres to get clear of Whakatane and Auckland.
