Club’s founder cuts cake at birthday

Mrs Vera Mason, founder of the British Women’s Overseas Club, cut the cake at the 24th birthday party held recently in St Matthew’s Guild Room.

The president, Mrs S. Charlesworth, presented gifts to the retiring president, Mrs K. Mason, the retiring treasurer, Mrs E. Isaacson, and to Mrs M. Sowman who retired from the committee after eight years in office as secretary, president and vice-president.

Floral sprays were presented to the following members, Mesdames A. W. Lowe, E. V. Mason and E. J. Matson, and to Mrs J. Maclean, the hospital visitor, and Mrs J. Sunley, reporter.

Winners of games and competitions organised by committee members were Mrs W. Strudwick, Mrs J. Sunley and Mrs J. Mclean.

Officers elected were. – President, Mrs S. Charlesworth; vice-president, Mrs K. Mason; secretary, Mrs A. Meakin; committee, Miss E. Bannister, and Mesdames F. Bilbie, J. Brown, W. Dagg, A. Frew, A. Martin, E. Mead, H. Middleton and H. W. Wilson.

200-year-old bottle among exhibits

A 200-year-old bottle and a Welsh christening mug nearly 150 years old were among the glass objects exhibited by members of the British Women’s Overseas Club at the June meeting in St Matthew’s Guild Room, Hastings.

The president, Mrs S. Charlesworth, spoke of plans to hold a bring-and-buy stall at the July meeting.

Mrs H. B. Cook, described a visit to the Philippines and Japan, and spoke of changes she noticed in Japan since a previous visit.

British Women’s Overseas Club

A brisk trade was done by a bring-and-buy stall at the July meeting of the British Women’s Overseas Club, held at St Matthew’s Guild Room, Hastings.

The meeting was presided over by Mrs S. Chatsworth [Charlesworth], who also presented a short sketch with Mrs J. Frew.

Members discussed the club’s increased expenses and suggested remedies will be considered at the next afternoon meeting.

Talk on plants

A talk on the propagation of plants from cuttings was given by Mr J. F. Mathers at the September meeting of the British Women’s Overseas Club.

Mr Mathers answered questions put by members and was thanked by the president, Mrs S. Charlesworth.

The meeting was held of [at] St Matthew’s Hall, Hastings.

Several pieces of porcelain were displayed by members.

Heirlooms displayed by members

Rare horse brasses and family heirlooms were among the brass articles exhibited by members of the British Women’s Overseas Club at the October meeting held in St Matthew’s Guild Room, Hastings.

Miss Christine Adams gave a talk on skin care and demonstrated make-up technique. She was thanked by the president, Mrs S. Charlesworth, and was presented with flowers and a gift.

Their Christmas party had British flavour

A Christmas party with a specially British flavour was enjoyed by 60 members and guests of the British Women’s Overseas Club in St Matthew’s Guild room.

Accompanied by Mrs T. Whitehouse, members joined in singing songs from the different parts of the British Isles in which they were born.

Music for party games and items was played by Mrs S. Smith. Prizewinners were Mrs K. Menzies, Mrs T. Stuart and Mrs L. H. Wainscott.

The president, Mrs S. Charlesworth, supervised the exchange of Christmas gifts and Mrs Whitehouse accompanied the singing of carols by candlelight. The club’s founder, Mrs Vera Mason, cut the cake which was made by Mrs J. F. Massie.
