John Paynter appointed to Apple and Pear Board

A young Hastings grower, Mr M. J. (John) Paynter, will replace Mr J. R. Waigth, Otago, as a grower member of the Apple and Pear Marketing Board.

Mr Paynter’s appointment was confirmed today by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr MacIntyre.

The president of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation, Mr Keith McCliskie, said from Nelson today the federation had recommended Mr Paynter and Mr Vic Sunde, Auckland, deputy-chairman of the board, to fill two board seats up for reappointment.

Three men were considered by the federation, Mr Sunde, Mr Waigth and Mr Paynter.

Usually growers are put up for consideration by the districts they come from, but in this case Mr Paynter was nominated by Nelson and Canterbury growers.

Mr Waigth was appointed to the board in December, 1970. At the time he was also a director of the federation, but he later relinquished this post.

Mr Paynter, 35, married with four children, has been in orcharding all his life. He is a fourth-generation fruitgrower. His great grandfather grew fruit in Nelson, as did his grandfather.

Mr Paynter’s father Mr Howard Paynter, has been fruitgrowing for 50 years.

Mr Howard Paynter was president of the Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers’ Association at the time the board was formed and helped in its establishment.

PARTNERSHIP

Mr John Paynter gained his diploma in horticulture from Massey University in 1962 and in 1964 joined his father in partnership on a 12-acre orchard.

He bought his first orchard the following year and has since in conjunction with his father and Mr Peter Andersen bought more than 100 acres of orchard.

In 1973 with Mr Andersen he formed the packaging, promotion and marketing company of Yummy Nectarines Ltd which sells nectarines in New Zealand and overseas.

He is technical director of Asparagus Ltd which owns a 237-acre orchard off St George’s Rd North planted mainly in apples.
