THE MALE REVOLUTION

The acceptance, by men, of more colourful clothing and accessories during the past decade has created a virtual revolution in the menswear business.

Gone are the conservative days where all styles and drab colours were the same and made all men look alike. They are now paying more attention to the way they look.

Many mercers agree that the changes of the past few years have been greater than at any other time in history.

Not least of the reasons advanced for the changes is that of the female influence and men today are more ready to accept a woman’s opinion about dress than were their forfathers [FOREFATHERS].

NEW STYLES

However, it is the younger brigade which is given most credit for leading the revolution and many of the older generation have now fallen happily into line and accepted the new styles.

Even the businessman has succumbed to the trend and the traditional three-piece suit has disappeared.

In its place is a two-piece suit and an emphasis on casual wear.

For leisure wear the “In” style now is for reefer-type jackets or sports coats with contrasting coloured slacks.

“Oxford Bags”, those ultra-wide trousers so well-known in the 1930s, disappeared for many years to replaced by the slim-line pants and jeans.

Today, the fashion has turned full circle and the wide slacks are back in favour.

With manufacturers offering such a wide range of fittings now, a made-to-measure suit or pair of trousers is a rarity.

WHITE SHIRT

Even as recently as 10 years ago a white shirt was standard dress for most occasions and here the change has probably been most marked.

Today the fashion is for shirts to be as colourful as the rainbow and in a wide variety of styles.

Overcoats, or top coats as they were often referred to, have been replaced by stylish short coats or waterproof jackets.

Retailers report that fewer ties are being worn keeping with the casual look.

It was usual for mercers to stock a wide range of sizes and brands of men’s hats, but in most shops the selection is very limited today, because they, too, have gone out of favour.

Sock manufacturers have joined in the revolution and men’s hose is available today in many attractive designs.

Scarves are still popular and gloves, although mainly sold in the winter, are still in demand.

Closer ties with overseas fashion centres have meant that changes reach here faster and consequently the New Zealand male can now be as fashionably dressed as his counterpart anywhere else in the world without having to wait several seasons as in the past.
