Newspaper Article 1979 – $4000 saw sharpening machine

A $4000 saw sharpening machine designed and built with funds raised by the Hastings Rotary Club is to be sent to the Kito sawmill in the New Hebrides.

The sawmill is run by a combined mission group.

The funds were raised by the Rotary club with a six-week series of public lectures by representatives of the automotive industry.

The machine was built by Mr Ray Custance, Haden and Custance Ltd, St Aubyn St, Hastings.

The manager of the Kito sawmill, Mr Jack Numani, was sponsored by the Havelock Rotary Club to spend a year in Hawke’s Bay two years ago studying sawmilling methods.

Picture shows Hastings Rotary President Mr Roger Bate (left), chairman of the club’s international committee, Mr Ron Henry [Hendry] (centre), and the designer of the machine, Mr Custance.
