Fruit man retires

Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers’ Association secretary Mr Barclay McLaren resigned last week amid tributes for his 10 years of service.

Association president Mr Keith Spackman was one who said Mr McLaren’s work was of the highest standard.

Mr McLaren became secretary of the association soon after he retired as secretary and deputy general manager of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation and settled in Havelock North.

Mr Graeme Wake said at the association’s annual meeting last week that Mr McLaren was the best secretary the association had ever had.

“He is very efficient and does things thoroughly,” he said.

Immediate past-president, Mr Fred Horrocks, said he first met Mr McLaren when he was office boy for the federation in Hastings 50 years ago.

“He has worked tirelessly for fruit-growing.

“He can be very proud of the place where the fruit growing industry finds itself today,” he said.

Mr McLaren was also secretary of the apple and pear prices authority and closely associated with the formation of the Apple and Pear Board.
