$11,000 an acre paid for orchard land

Slightly more than five hectares (12 acres) of orchard land on the Hastings City boundary sold for about $27,000 a hectare ($11,000 an acre) yesterday.

The property, in Norton Rd, was auctioned on behalf of Messrs S. and C. E. Royal and bought by a Hastings district orchardist who wishes to remain anonymous.

About 28 people attended the auction at the Angus Inn where bidding began at $90,000 and reached $130,000 before the property was passed in. It later sold by negotiation for $136,000.

The land was sown in lucerne last autumn and was partly drained. Its soil was mainly class 19 Kaiapo clay loam. A large farm shed was included.
