Orchardist heads HB list
Havelock North orchardist, Mr Ken Kiddle, who has been awarded the CMG, heads the list of four Hawke’s Bay people named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours today.
The others are Hastings Scouting leader Mr John Holderness (Order of the British Empire, OBE); and Ongaonga community worker, Mrs Margaret Boyce and Hastings paraplegic teacher Mr Brian Cox, who have been awarded the Queen’s Service Medal (QSM).
Mr Kenneth Walter Kiddle, has been chairman of the Apple and Pear Marketing Board since 1974.
He has been a fruitgrower since 1956 and was elected to the executive of the Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers Association in 1960. This was followed by his appointment to the marketing board in 1968.
Last year he represented the board on a high-powered trade mission to Japan which was led by the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr MacIntyre.
He joined the mission following his return from vital annual freight negotiations for the shipping of pears and apples to world markets.
Each year he also visits the board’s marketing agents in Europe, United States and South-east Asia.
Mr Kiddle grows apples and pears on a 4.8 hectare orchard in Waimarama Rd with his wife Marion.
They have five children and seven grandchildren, including a son, Mr Ian Kiddle, who owns a nearby orchard and a daughter Mrs Vivien Osborne who, with her husband, is establishing an orchard and vineyard next door.
Mr John Hildebrand Holderness has received his OBE for services to Scouting and the community.
Since 1946 Mr Holderness has been the Hastings City solicitor. He has served as president of the Hawke’s Bay Law Society and of the New Zealand Law Conference.
From 1942 to 1947 he was District Commissioner for the Hastings Scout District and since 1964 he has been the Waiapu Area Commissioner.
He has represented New Zealand at three Asian/Pacific Scout conferences and was camp chief at the 1981 Jamboree held in Hastings.
Mr Holderness was president of the Hastings Rotary Club in 1956 and president of the Flaxmere Golf Club.
Mrs Margaret Napier Boyce receives the QSM for her services to the community.
Mrs Boyce has been involved as secretary-treasurer of several sports clubs including the Ongaonga Sports Club and the Wallingford Smallbore Rifle Club.
She has also been a member of the Ruahine Miniature Rifle Club and the Ongaonga Ladies Golf Club.
Mrs Boyce was secretary of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers and president of the Ongaonga Country Women’s Institute.
The Girl Guides and Brownies have also been helped by Mrs Boyce who served as a badge tester.
Mrs Boyce has been a teacher in Wellington and Hawke’s Bay for 50 years.
Mr Brian Leslie Cox a paraplegic since birth, has been an active member of disabled groups.
Mr Cox received the QSM for his services to those groups. He was co-ordinator of the 1981 Paraplegic and Physically Disabled Games.
A science teacher at Karamu College, he has been chairman of the Access Committee for the Disabled and he has served on the Disabled Co-ordinating Council for Hawke’s Bay.
He was also a committee member of the Hawke’s Bay Paraplegic and Physically Disabled Association and is in his third term as treasurer.
Mr Cox has also been active in school sports and club activities.
