Shield is ‘apple’ of growers’ eyes

The Retemeyer Shield for the apple grower who best complies with packaging and quality standards has been won by Mr Don Jeffery, Evenden Rd, Hastings, pictured above with his wife, Joyce, who is quality controller at their Evendale Orchard.

The annual competition between the district’s 420 growers was decided yesterday afternoon by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers’ Association.

The shield was presented to Mr and Mrs Jeffery last night at the association’s remit meeting.

“I grow the fruit and this year everything turned out well, but Joyce is the one who runs the packing shed,” said Mr Jeffery.

Mrs Jeffery’s ability in maintaining quality control standards was a major reason for the win.

“We also had a good staff,” Mr Jeffery said.

Association president Mr Keith Spackman announced Mr Alex Rainbow, Twyford, as the runner-up.

Mr Rainbow, who submitted unpacked fruit to the Apple and Pear Marketing Board was doing an exceptional job, he said.
