Havelock retailers’ president retires

Further development to the Havelock North Village shopping centre is being considered, which will make the village one of the best areas to shop in Hawke’s Bay,” said the retiring president of the borough’s retailers’ association.

Michael Poppelwell (pictured at right) who retired from the position at an annual meeting last week, said a development in Middle Road had proved to be a success with enough parking to meet shoppers’ needs.

Mr Poppelwell has been replaced by Barry Leadbetter, proprietor of the Havelock North Garden Centre. “I wish him well, and hope he gets as much support as I did,” Mr Poppelwell said.

Also retiring is the secretary, Murray Greene, who was a driving force behind a boulevard day last year. He was replaced by Bob Christensen.

Mr Poppelwell said the crime rate had dropped significantly in the village.

“Obviously, the local security officer, Gary Grant, has been a major factor in this reduction.”

The meeting was attended by three borough councillors and mayor Harry Romanes.
