$20,000 grant for Marineland rebuild

Napier’s Marineland has been granted $20,000 to help with the $50,000 upgrading of the marine zoo.

The Marineland and Aquarium Trust Board applied to the Tourist and Publicity Department for a grant under the community and public sector grants scheme, and the cheque for $20,000 was presented to the board by Napier MP, Mr Geoff Braybrooke, on Friday.

The Minister of Tourism, Mr Moore, announced the scheme last year to help local bodies and boards develop tourist attractions.

The secretary of the Marineland Trust Board, Mr Christopher Bean, believes the grant of $20,000 is the first under the scheme to come to Hawke’s Bay.

The grant will offset the cost of work required to meet standards set by marine biologist Dr Alan Baker after a ministerial inquiry into Marineland.

Work on building a new hospital pool and extending the holding pool is almost completed.

The improvements are needed before any more dolphins can be caught.
