Havelock N man wins trust award

A Havelock North man is among the first to receive the Certificate of Meritorious Service, a new award created by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

Mr Bell is a life member of the Historic Places Trust and has received the award in honour of the contributions he has made to the trust.

Mr Bell was a foundation member of the Hawke’s Bay Regional Committee in 1957, and he served on the committee until his retirement earlier this year.

For the last nine years on the committee he served as vice chairman and from 1979 to 1981 he was also a member of the Historic Places Trust Board.

A retired farmer, Mr Bell is a well-known local historian. His publications include: The History of the Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society, 1863-1983; The History of St James Church, Mahora, Hastings, and a series of historical maps of New Zealand.
