Local bus inspector retires

Karori resident Des Golding (pictured) is retiring from his job as senior inspector with the Wellington City Council after a lifetime in the transport department.

Des started with the department in August 1947 as a 17 year old from Hawkes Bay who had arrived in Wellington just two weeks previously. After working as a tram conductor Des became a motorman in March 1951. In time he decided to try the buses and was made a bus driver in September 1952.

His next step up was to inspector in April 1964 and after moving up through the various duties he was appointed senior inspector on 14 July 1977. Since then Des has continued with his senior inspector’s tasks as well as acting as shift inspector on countless occasions.

Des hopes to play more golf at Karori Golf Club and to paint his house now that he will have plenty of time on his hands.

He is well known in Karori and has coached Karori rugby teams.
