50 young musicians for school

Fifty young musicians from throughout the region will converge on Lindisfarne College in Hastings at the weekend for the Hawke’s Bay Orchestral Society’s summer music school.

The school will be catering for all types of instrumental players with both a concert band and orchestra being formed under the direction of John Snowling and Susan Melville.

Along with the school manager, Denis Hibbs, the pair have spent months planning for the school and making “musical growth” a priority.

Mr Hibbs said even at this late stage there were still positions available at the school and young musicians interested in more details could contact him on 879 9333.

On Sunday at 2.30pm, the school will stage a “cushion concert” on the Lindisfarne homestead lawn.

“The gardens at the college are a wonderful venue for this type of performance and concert lovers are sure to enjoy the talents of these young people,” Mr Hibbs said.

More strings wanted

Meanwhile, Hawke’s Bay’s regional orchestra wants to add more strings to its bow.

The orchestra needs more string instrument players before it starts its series of concerts in March. Rehearsals begin early next month.
