End of an era for stock men

Four men with Stortford Lodge Saleyards links spanning 183 years were at the saleyards yesterday for the last big ewe fair of the season. All have worked as stock agents and/or auctioneers. They are, from left: Doug Murley (35 years), Doug Grieve (51 years), Jo Barry (52 years) and Red McLay (41 years). Yesterday’s fair was the last sale before the yards are totally revamped to accommodate the extension of Southampton St to Maraekakaho Rd.

Hawke’s Bay is in the middle of a building and development boom, with more than $100-million already committed or in the pipeline.

The lion’s share of the money is being spent in and around Hastings, but other districts from Wairoa to Dannevirke are also sharing in the boom.

To see just how all this money is being spent turn to page 2.
