Newspaper Article 1988 – Farmer of the year: Why me?

Farmer of the year: Why me?

By SHONA  WILSON

Hawke’s Bay farmer of the year Mr Graeme Fountaine, right, takes a break after a day’s shearing.

Mr Fountaine runs 7500 stock units on his property on Taihape Road, Waiwhare, west of Napier.

He entered the Richmond Ltd Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year competition after his accountants suggested it to him

“I have been in similar competitions and enjoyed them, so I decided to enter,” he said.

Mr Fountaine farms a 575-hectare sheep and cattle farm.

He has had 17 years farming experiences.

“The farm is basically wool orientated.

“I don’t know why I won because the farm is convential [conventional],”’ he said.

Mr Fountaine said he was pleased with winning the competition, which drew 17 other farmers.

Mr Fountaine’s  property is divided into two blocks, which are different heights. One is moderate hill country and the other is basically river flats.

He has used his management policy since he took over the properties in 1981, to push the two blocks to their full potential.
