Newspaper Article 1989 – Business is Booming

Business is Booming

My father ran a very busy shop in Hastings selling all manner of menswear – workwear, shoes, boyswear, schoolwear – clothing for young men of all ages was the way he put it.

That’s where I started my working life in 1961, firstly as a parcel boy after school. It all made me decide I wanted to learn the menswear trade.

After my first four years there I spent one year in Wellington working for Vance Vivian menswear shop, in those days a very big organisation. That metropolitan year considerably widened my experience in the trade.

Returning to Hastings, I began to learn the skills of buying our stock. That became a major job as the business developed and grew to four shops.

Just 10 years ago this October, I started in the present Havelock North shop and that has been most challenging and rewarding. So I have now had 28 years, experience in the menswear trade.

During those years I have served on the Hastings Retailers’ Association for a number of years, and also, on the Hawke’s Bay Retailers’ Association. I have been the menswear and boyswear representative to the New Zealand Retailers’ Federation. I am a member of the Havelock North Retailers’ Association and was president for three years.

My wife, Betty, and I have four children and feel we understand fully the needs of an active family. Our shop in Havelock North keeps us very busy. We and Stephen enjoy serving the Havelock North community and value highly your continued support. – Michael Poppelwell (Poppelwells, Havelock North).
