1100 at jubilee

Parkvale School’s 75th jubilee celebrations at the weekend, which drew more than 1100 people, presented “a brilliant occasion”, the school principal, Peter Schirnack, said today.

The jubilee was the culmination of two years’ work by the organising committee and draw [drew] participants from the United States and Australia.

Events began at the school on Friday and continued through the weekend at the school and the Hawke’s Bay Racing Centre.

Former Hastings deputy-mayor Ron Shakespeare, who started his schooling as a primer 1 pupil in 1921, said the weekend was “a really great get-together”.

The school opened on February 4, 1919, and the first decade of pupils was well represented at the reunion, said a member of the registrations committee, former pupil and later teacher Flora Ross.

She said participants were particularly impressed with young members of a martial arts club who kept watch over cars and the function and escorted people to their vehicle after late gatherings.
